Exciting News for Microsoft Dynamics GP Users!

If you’re wondering what Microsoft is up to these days, it’s a lot.  To see for yourself, check out the October 2018 Business Application Release notes that they just published.   It has over 236 pages of announcements and new information on their Dynamics 365 and Office 365 family of cloud products.

These Release notes should be of particular interest to Microsoft Dynamics GP users who may be wondering what the future of Dynamics GP is given Microsoft’s marketing focus on their new Dynamics 365 products.   The answer, as you can see starting on Page 117, is that the future is still very, very bright for Dynamics GP.

Microsoft clearly states in the notes that Dynamics GP is going to continue to receive product improvements and updates.  The most exciting of those improvements is the announcement that they are going to link Dynamics GP to Business Central and Microsoft’s new Intelligent Cloud.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, for those of you not familiar with it, is Microsoft’s new cloud-based ERP solution for the SMB (Small and medium business) marketplace.   Business Central is much more than just an ERP system, though.   It is part of an entire suite of cloud-based business applications, including Office 365 and Dynamics 365 Sales & Marketing (formerly Dynamics CRM).

Business Central also includes now what Microsoft is calling the Intelligent Cloud.  The intelligent cloud leverages solutions such as Power BI, PowerApps, Flow and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide insight and actionable messages enabling your business to run even better.

Dynamics GP can work directly with products like PowerBI, but as you can see from the image below, Microsoft’s intent is to seamlessly connect Dynamics GP to the Intelligent Cloud through Business Central.

Business Applications Release Notes – October ’18 – Microsoft

When the connection is made, your on-premise Dynamics GP data will be securely replicated to the intelligent cloud.  You simply decide which companies you want to replicate (all if you choose), and then, within the main pages of your Dynamics GP solution, Microsoft will deliver back actionable analysis and content.

According to Microsoft, an added benefit of the link to Business Central is that, if you want to move someday from Dynamics GP to Microsoft’s new cloud enabled solution (Dynamics 365 Business Central), your data will already be available.
